Sam Welton Presentation

In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

• Young girl, dressed promiscuously makes her seem vulnerable.

• Ambient, eerie, non-diegetic music sets the mood.

• Murderer maintains mystery staying hooded throughout the intro.

• Stalking victims is often common in thriller and horror movies.

• The intro ends on a cliffhanger which is typical of these kind of movies.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

• One social group represented in my media is young girls.

• It is very typical of thriller and horror films to use young, attractive girls as victims.

• Our actress is shown as vulnerable as she is completely unaware that she is being followed, whereas the audience know she is because of the use of point of view shots.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

• My product would probably be distributed by British film companies such as Film 4. This is because it has been made with a very low budget, English actors, filmed in England.

• However, it could also be distributed by film companies specializing in horror/thriller films such as Lions Gate Entertainment.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience would be people between the ages of 15 and 21.
The age rating is 15 because there is content included in the film that is inappropriate for
children under this age.
However, generally people stop watching horror films when they become older.
I used actors around the same age as my target audience as it is relatable.

How did you attract/address your audience?
To keep the audience engaged, I used a variety of camera shots, angles and
movement.
I used a female actress because it is relatable for women. However, this may also
attract men to watch the film.
By following stereotypical media conventions, people who enjoy to watch horrors
would probably enjoy to watch it.
Tension was maintained by having the music build up as the girl walks home, also
through point of view shots making it look like she is being watched.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the
product?
My skills in iMovie have developed considerably during the course of editing the
movie.
I learnt how to do such things as stabilizing unsteady shots, which gave my
product a more professional feel and giving the movie an overall better flow.
How to crop the clip length to take out anything unnecessary that may have been
at the start or end of each clip.
I have learnt how to create and edit my soundtrack using Garage Band. However,
I only used the default samples.

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
I have learnt how create tension through the use of different camera shots,
angles and movement.
How tension can be built by using an effective soundtrack.
To make sure everything unnecessary is out of the shot, as in the preliminary
task, there were people and objects such as tripods in the shot at some points
which we had to crop out of the movie.
